The Leaves Are Chaging

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.”-Jim Bishop

Well, it's that time of year again. The leaves are changing, the wind grows colder, and your flip-flops have retired to that desolate corner in your closet. That's right, IT'S FALL! I've never experienced fall until I came to Connecticut. In Mississippi, the leaves just turn dirt brown and "fall" off. I spent many a day begrudgingly raking those dun leaves of "fall"-pardon my digression. But there is something captivating about the fall foliage in New England. As I was walking down my street today, I couldn't help stopping to admire the beauty of this scene.  I stood in awe as the sun pierced through the golden leaves. These are the moments that I live for. More times than not, people are so busy with work that they neglect the simple pleasures in life. (Being a financially restricted college student, I have learned to derive pleasure from "free" experiences). The semester, as well as the calendar year, is almost over. Take this time to: reflect on what has passed, express hopes for the future, and enjoy the view.

Freshman Year = Fresh Start

A Tip from Shakespeare: "For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so" (Hamlet act 2.2)

You don't have to be a Shakespearian scholar to understand what Hamlet is saying in this quote. Basically life is what you make it ; your thoughts and actions create meaning. College is an adolescences' first  real taste of  "life". So what are you going to make of it? As a student, you have a choice to make: either stay within your familiar comfort zone (hang out with the same people, stay in the same place, order food from Hing Wah every Thursday night, etc.) OR dive in to a wealth of experience.
Giselle, Kelly, and Me Freshman Spring Formal
When I was a Freshman at Albertus, I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity possible. The thought of exploring New Haven, a city that I had never been, produced a current of excitement through my mind. WOW! Here I am, 1000 miles away from Mississippi in a new place, and the world is MINE! Now, for some, this sentiment my be foreign. Being far away from home is a challenge, as well as being in college. But that's what college is all about: out with the old and in with the new. Unfortunately, old habits die HARD! If a person is used to staying inside, it will be hard for him or her to go outside. I learned this with my roommate Kelly (specifics will be disclosed in another blog post).

So here are a few steps to getting out of your comfort zone:

TALK - Even if you don't know anyone on campus, talk to them. New people, can be the doorway to new experiences.

GO WITH IT - (within reason) Ignore your inclination to stay within your bubble. If a group of friends want to go on a walk to Gourmet Heaven at 2 a.m. , tag along. (It makes for a good story, and a GREAT sandwich)

BOND WITH YOUR ROOMATE - My roommate from freshman year (Kelly), has become one of my best friends! However, even though we are polar opposites, we still bonded. Don't close your roommate out of your life.... that is kind of impossible all things considered.

HAVE FUN - Don't be so engrossed in school work that you reject all forms of social interaction. Have a little fun! Go to the Pub and play The Michael Jackson Experience on the Wii or Pool with friends. Work hard, yes, but create a balance.

I hope that my tips helped. Take it from a person that is almost done with college: Do you want to look back at college and it be incredibly blasé ? Or do you want to look back at your college experience and say, "Wow! I made the most of my time at Albertus" ? Remember, it isn't good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.
